Good Morning All...Since I have been told I have a flair for the obvious, I'll not disappoint and state I am so impressed with the passion and dedication of all members involved with the institute.  It has been such a pleasure to be with you all.

Still perplexed about student names and the discussion about same.  I might just be honest and ask what they prefer and go from there and do what is best for them.  Names begin to define us so essentially I would work to pronounce their name.

  1. I think your approach is straight-forward and shows respect. I think it's the interactions like this throughout the year that make the children feel valued. Be happy, Deb

  2. I totally agree with you Dan...the student should tell you what he/she wants to be called. When I was a soccer coach, I told a kid that and he told me he wanted to be called Frankenstein. So I called him that for most of the season until his parents told him to tell me to stop yelling "Run faster, Frankenstein!"

I think the point about the names was more so when English speaking teachers do not make an effort to pronounce a non-english name and just want call everyone Tom or Sue.

    1. Changing someone's name to suit your own linguistic needs when you are in the position of power (the teacher) can be a sort of forced assimilation or somewhat of a cultural identity theft.
