Day Two - August 7, 2012

The sessions today were stimulating and made me think and rethink about inequality, social justice, prejudice and the tremendous responsibility that lies on our shoulders as educators to shape the thinking of the future generation.

Thank you Summer Institute at Penn for organizing this workshop. I am already looking forward to the rest of the week.

  1. Shruti, I found the discussion of names which you initiated to be enlightening.

  2. Shruti, I'm glad to have this space to address your question regarding the discussion of names. Remember when Jamal talked about the third alternative? I think we may need to open our minds to this possibility. A third alternative would be to learn both names and play around with using them both without embarrassing the students or putting them on the spot in front of others. The students may have BOTH identities, which is the third alternative, as Jamal said so eloquently. I respect what you were trying to do by honoring the students' given names, and I do the same. Nevertheless, I also want to be attentive to what the students are requesting.
